Nitrate Vulnerable Zone Records

Nutrient planning and record keeping

The rules for NVZ recording can often appear complex and daunting, but we are here to help. Many Green Shoots Farm Consultancy clients are farming within an NVZ. This does create some fairly exacting record keeping requirements but also creates opportunities for cost savings to the farm business, particularly on the fertiliser bill.

NVZ Compliance

Farmers with land in NVZs need to keep a host of records and carry out a range of calculations on nutrient management planning, fertiliser application and organic manure production, storage and use. This is particularly complicated for livestock farmers with different animals and manure types on the farm at various times of year. We work with farmers on their NVZ records and nutrient management plans, to ensure cross compliance and make the most of nutrients available in manures and get the best from their livestock, grass and crops.

Managing NVZ Records UK

Key record-keeping requirements in an NVZ

Nitrate Vulnerable Zones (NVZs) have been designated by Defra to protect water quality from nitrates from agricultural sources which affects life in our streams, rivers, ponds, lakes and sea and impacts drinking water abstractions. If you are farming in an NVZ, under the Nitrate Pollution Prevention Regulations, you need to take action to store, plan and apply organic manure and nitrogen fertilisers within specific times, areas and application limits and keep records of this.

The key record-keeping requirements for a farm in an NVZ are:

  • A Farm Risk map

  • Livestock Manure Nitrogen Farm limit calculation

  • Storage calculation

  • Nitrogen Management Plan

  • Field records

  • N-max calculation
